Kestrel Class Y5

Welcome to the Summer term in

Kestrel Class!

Our teacher is Mrs Lawrie.

 

We have lots to look forward this term as we learn about the Georgians and human development.
We will also become researchers and authors publishing what we find out about the history of our school and village.

PE kits must be in school every day. 

In geography, we learnt how to use OS maps and compass directions, then created our own treasure maps with clues for others to follow. It was challenging but a lot of fun!

We explored our understanding of polygons in teams. We were surprised by how much we already new!

We’ve been learning about animal life cycles and have been lucky enough to see five tiny caterpillars metamorphose into butterflies.

We’ve been studying the work of sculptor, Antony Gormley, and have sketched our own designs that we then turned into play dough and wire sculptures.

We really enjoyed watching The Wizard of Oz by M&M Productions

We had a great time exploring Kings Cliff Wood, sketching the landscape features and planning our myths.

We’ve been learning how to build a shelter in the Forest School

We’ve been learning about the lifecycles of living things and did a hunt to learn about animal gestation periods.

Well done Amelia for your winning Easter design

We have been learning about the Tudors this term and have designed and made our own crests.

We really enjoyed the Easter Egg Hunt and meeting the Easter Bunny

This term the children have been preparing to take over the teaching in the classroom. Every child took a turn to teach the rest of the class something new. What fantastic teachers they all made!

In computing today, we created story boards for our videos.

We had great fun with our Red Nose Day nose and spoon race and loved hearing Tommy share his joke with the rest of the school...

We had a fabulous World Book Day!

We tried out some extreme reading...

We shared books with Lamb and Duckling classes...

We took part in a catwalk to show our great outfits...and celebrated our winners

The space dome was out of this world!

We’ve experimenting with different art techniques to use in creating our class Space book

In maths, we’ve been exploring our ideas about what is and isn’t a fraction.

We were very lucky to have author, Andrew Powell-Thomas, visit Year 5 today to launch a very exciting project. Keep a look out for updates over the next few weeks!

We are learning all about Earth and space this term. We’re getting pretty good at remembering the order of the planets and have found some fascinating facts about space and our solar system.

We have been learning all about the properties of materials and have tested thermal and electrical insulators and condcutors and tried separating materials using different processes

We went for a sensory trip around the school grounds to find inspiration for our poetry.

We have been exploring Scratch coding projects to get inspiration for our own crations

We had a great day at Ashford Education Centre learning about the way water is processed so that it is safe to drink and making dams in the river.

We were introduced to Active Blasts along with the rest of the school. We certainly got active and it really was a blast!

We’ve been investigating how air resistance can affect the movement of objects by making parachutes.

Congratulations to Hollie, Heidi, Charlie and Ella for being first to receive pen licences this term.

In English, we have been imaging what we would see on a trip along the Amazon river through music and drama and hot seating to explore the feelings of Maia, our main story character.

We are really enjoying our swimming lessons this term and making great progress too!

We are proud to be able to introduce our class reps. Tommy is our school council member and Hannah is our librarian.

In Science, we are learning about balanced and opposing forces...

We have been working super hard since coming back to school, but we’ve also enjoyed learning to be effective communicators and cooperators, working together as a team
