English activity – Monday 1st June
This week your project focus is ‘Environment’ and your English work will be working alongside this for the week.

Activity

Additional comments

Before you can get started you need to choose either an endangered animal or a threatened habitat.
E.g. Giant panda, polar bear, African elephant OR the rainforest, Antarctica, coral reef.

Over the next few days you are going to research why the animal has become endangered or how the habitat is now threatened. With the aim of writing a letter from this animal/ habitat to the world informing them of what they need to do to help.

Think about some of these when researching:
- the impact humans have had (e.g. hunting, deforestation, plastic pollution)
- climate change
- reasons why the habitats have been lost
- changes to the ecosystem
- what can we do to help?

You will be conducting your research from Monday to Wednesday this week so don’t feel like you need to rush through it all today!

* Keep all your research together in one place.

Today, research a piece of art that you like, and write a small response to it. Take the time to look at the piece of art, and try to understand why you like it. When you write your response, try to focus on the feelings and meaning that the artwork gives you.
Example artwork

  • Mona Lisa (Leonardo da Vinci)
  • Starry night (Vincent van Gogh)
  • The water lily pond (Monet)
  • Convergence (Jackson Pollock)
  • The weeping woman (Pablo Picasso)

You can research your own piece as well if you like!

You can write your response on a piece of paper, in a notebook or email your response to your teacher.

Some examples of instructions you might want to use are to bake a cake, build a lego model, draw an animal step-by-step, make salt dough or a set of directions for a family walk. What other instructions can you find in your house or on the internet?

It is important for our health, well-being and education to make the most of every day. One good way to do this is to set achievable targets for every day.

Create yourself a weekly planner, or use the one below.

For each day, decide:

  • when you’ll get out of bed and get ready for the day
  • what home learning you’ll do and when
  • what book you will choose to read this week
  • one new experience you’ll have each day
  • two things you can do to help your family each day

It’s always useful to share your plans with someone, that way they can support and encourage you to achieve your goals. So make sure you display your plan clearly in your house and you could even share it with your teacher!
