Lila needs our help as she wants to say thank you to her Grandfather for telling her the secret of the rain. We are going to help Lila by writing a thank you letter.

Before we can write our letter, we need to have a think about what we need to include. Can you remember any of the key features you need in a letter? Have a look at the video on the class blog to refresh your memory.

After you have looked at the video, have a look at the muddled-up example letter (you can download this as a word document). Can you cut up and re-order this letter correctly and then label the key features? You can use the video to help you if you get stuck.

You can either stick the letter back together in the correct order using glue or for more of a challenge, re-write the letter in the correct order using your very BEST handwriting. If you’d fancy an even bigger challenge, can you add some more writing into the main text? What else could Lila’s mummy say to the sky?

Compass points.

Today we are going to learn about compass directions. Have a look at the pictures below to see these.

 To help me remember the four compass points I always use rhyme;

Never (North)

Eat (East)

Shredded (South)

Wheat (West)

Have a go at following the directions in the word document below. Can you write the answers for each?

You could also design your own map and give directions to get from one place to another. You could give this to someone at home to complete OR you could go in the garden/outside and give someone directions to get from one place to another?

Here is my example. I used the writing frame to help me.

The Hut

Kenya

19th January 2021

Dear Grandfather,

I am writing to say a huge thank you for telling me the secret of the rain because the crops have started to grow and we aren’t so hot all the time!

When the rain came down, I was so amazed at what it felt like on my skin. I went and got lots of drinking water for our hut and the animals. We were all so happy that we all sang and danced together, it was such a wonderful day.

When are you next coming to visit? I can’t wait to hear your next secret!

From Lila

Over the next few days, we are going to be writing our own story inspired by ‘Lila and the Secret of Rain’. The title of our story will be ‘YOUR NAME and the Secret of the Sun’.

Our story will be about our journey on the secret of the sun and instead of being set in Kenya, our story will be set in North Petherton. The reason why our story is about the secret of the sun is because here in North Petherton, it is cold and usually rains a lot so, instead of searching for rain like Lila, we are in search of the sun!

Before we can write our story, we need to plan what we are going to include. We can use everything we have learnt about ‘Lila and the Secret of Rain’ to help us. You need to download the planning sheet word document (see resources) and use the question prompts to help you plan your own story.  Have a look on the class blog for the video for today’s lesson where Miss Carter talks you through the planning sheet and gives you some ideas you can use in your own story.

Remember that when we plan our story, we are noting down our ideas ready to write in detailed full sentences tomorrow.

Today we are going to use our planning sheet to write our own story.

We are going to write our story over two days to give you time to include lots of detail. Today we’d like you to write the beginning and middle section of your story. Remember to carefully re-read your story at the end of each day to check for any mistakes and to check that it makes sense!

In your story you need to remember …

  • to use past tense (words that show something has already happened)
  • to use time connectives to show the sequence of events
  • capital letters (for the names of people and places as well as the start of a sentence!)
  • full stops
  • to use adjectives (describing words)
  • to include lots of detail

You may want to include a question in your story too.
