Iron Age Day - We re-created life in the Iron Age by making names and flags for our tribe, gathering our supplies of iron ore, grain and livestock and battling for more. We also talked about why the Celts would trade and what jobs they would have had.

World book day 2020. Well done to everyone who helped make today fantastic. We had some creative words and clever costumes. We celebrated our words with a vocabulary parade, playing group games by finding our word classes, making human nonsense sentences and much more. We even made word family board games and played each others. Who knew you could have so much fun with words?

Wow, what a fun day we had yesterday in Cheddar Gorge. We were very lucky with the weather!

We looked at the rock formation of a cave. In it we saw the cave was made from sedimentary rock which we know are layers of crumbled rock and dead animals compressed over time. We discussed the Calcite which forms the ‘font’ and ‘Paul’s cathedral’ in Gough’s cave. We also learnt a little about stalactites and stalagmites as we ventured further into the cave. Many of us found it strange how the cheddar man was found in the cave and tried to imagine his life in the cave.

In the museum we handled skulls of various animals including a badger and a cow. We learnt how Neolithic people would have fished and even got to try on some of the animal skins so we looked the part. Petra explained how they would have made fire using King Edward cakes and an interesting tool.

After lunch we had one more activity which meant climbing Jacob's ladder and the observation tower. There were so many steps that most of us gave up counting. Once up on the gorge we could see a reservoir and Coombe quarry. We wondered if this is where they may have started to mine copper ore and tin at the start of the Bronze age.

It was dark in Cox's cave and a little scary at times but we watched the story of the Stone age in different parts of the cave. We enjoyed listening to the stories of our ancestors and experiencing how they lived. It was a great trip!

In our class we have been learning  about the pebble in my pocket and drew our own volcanoes. We are also going on a school trip to Cheddar Gorge on Wednesday the12th of February.

Good luck to these 4 runners representing Hare class in the cross country today. Good luck from all of us.

We have been learning about fossils in science. Could you find a fossil along the Jurassic coast? Take a family trip to Lyme Regis and pretend to be Mary Anning and her father searching for fossils.

We have acted out the emotions of the family as they hear their house will be flooded, created some brilliant performance poetry to the pitter patter of the rain drops and created some fabulous stories.
